Setup Steps
- Prepare the Workpiece
- Drill or bore a pilot hole through the workpiece.
- The hole should match the minor dimension of the broach (i.e., just smaller than the square size).
- Ensure the hole is ccentredand free of burrs.
- Install the Live Centre Tool
- Mount the live centre with the broaching tool in your lathe tailstock.
- Ensure the broaching tool is securely locked in place with the grub screw.
- Align the Lathe
- Line up the live centre and the chuck so they are perfectly concentric.
- The broach should enter the pilot hole cleanly and without resistance.
- Set the Speed
- Broaching is a low-speed process.
- Set your lathe to manual feed mode, ideally under 100 RPM if rotation is required (some setups use no rotation at all—just linear feed).
- Begin Broaching
- Advance the tailstock slowly and steadily.
- Let the broach shave material gradually; do not force it.
- Use cutting fluid (like light oil or tapping fluid) to improve finish and reduce tool wear.
- Withdraw and Clear Chips
- After each pass, retract the tailstock.
- Clean chips from the broach flutes using a brush or air (never your fingers!).
